KAMERHE IS THE MAN: Vital Kamerhe Voted New President of the National Assembly

The Ruling Sacred Union Coalition in the Democratic Republic of Congo have endorsed outgoing Deputy Minister of Economy and President of the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) party Vital Kamerhe as their candidate to become the next President of the house.

A primary election was held last night at the People’s Palace where National Deputies gathered to choose the next head of the house after the ruling Sacred Union Coalition and President Félix Tshisekedi failed to find reach a consensus for a common candidate to perch at the top of the National Assembly.

In the end, Kamerhe emerged victorious in the primary election with 183 votes gleaned from the 372 voters ahead of Christophe Mboso with 113 votes and Modeste Bahati Lukwebo who managed to garner 69 votes with seven (7) blank ballots recorded.

The next stage will be devoted to the publication of the timetable for the final election for the highest office of the National Assembly.

Vital Kamerhe previously served as Leader of the National Assembly under the government of President Joseph Kabila between 2006 and 2009.
