KATANGAISE OVERJOYED: Leopards’ Semi-final Qualification Sends Lubumbashi Population Onto The Streets

Scores of residents in the city of Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga Province went into a frenzy last night as they went onto the streets to celebrate DR Congo’s qualification into the semi-finals at the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Leopards came from a goal down to edge Guinea 3-1 in the quarter-final clash played at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium of Ebimpé in Abidjan on Friday night.

From men and women to boys and girls, the locals were gripped with joy and ran onto the streets immediately after the final whistle.

Lubumbashi was still awake into the early hours of Saturday as residents gathered at the city square where they sang songs of solidarity in a rare sight for population that has been greatly affected by economic hardships.

DR Congo have not won the AFCON since 1974 and will be eyeing reaching the final as they face the winner between hosts Ivory Coast and Mali in the semi-finals next week.
