A flying helicopter belonging to the United Nations stabilization mission in Congo (MONUSCO) was on Friday attacked by the M23-RDF terrorists in Karuba territory of Masisi in North Kivu Province.
The UN mission in the DRC revealed that stock two peacekeepers were left injured with one currently in critical condition.
Bintou Keita, head of the MONUSCO mission in the DRC, has strongly condemned act by the M23-RDF group who continue to terrorize several areas in the east.
Meanwhile in a press statement released yesterday, MONUSCO revealed that the aircraft did however manage to land in Goma despite the attack.
“A MONUSCO helicopter carrying out a medical evacuation came under fire from suspected M23 members around Karuba in the territory of Masisi (North Kivu). This attack injured two peacekeepers, one seriously. The aircraft was able to land safely in Goma and the two injured are being medically cared for,” reads the press statement signed by the mission.
This is not the first time the M23-RDF rebels have committed crimes on properties bearing United Nations emblems which nevertheless benefit from special protection have also attacked a aircraft belonging to the mission a year ago, with a South African peacekeeper losing his life in the incident.
