DRC PRESIDENTIAL RACE: Katumbi & Nine Others’ Candidacies Confirmed

The Democratic Republic of Congo goes to the polls on 20th December to elect its president to lead the nation for the next five years with ten (10) candidates successfully filing in their nomination to enter the presidential race.

Lead opposition Ensemble Pour la Republique President Moïse Katumbi Chapwe is one of the most notable names to have successfully entered the race.

Katumbi who was blocked from contesting the 2018 elections and has been faced with a great deal of injustices against his party in the build-up to 2023 polls, had his candidature confirmed on Wednesday after successfully filing in his nomination.

The former Katanga Governor is one of the hot favourites to challenge incumbent Fèlix Tshisekedi who is seeking a second term of office but is yet to file in his nomination.

Martin Fayulu, of the Lamuka Coalition, was President Tshisekedi’s closest challenger in the 2018 polls and has also confirmed his candidacy.

Former DRC Prime Minister in the ex-President Joseph Kabila’s regime, Matata Ponyo Mapon is also vying for the presidency on the Leadership and Governance for Development (LGD) party ticket.

The DRC electoral commission, CENI are expected to receive files for nomination in the coming including that of incumbent Fèlix Tshisekedi which is highly anticipated.

  • Moïse Katumbi Chapwe (Ensemble Pour la Republique)
  • Aggrey Kurisini Ngalasi (Independent)
  • Martin Madidi Fayulu (LAMUKA)
