BUNAGANA UNDER FOREIGN OCCUPATION: Mukwege Says Congo Is Not For Sale

Nobel prize winner Dr. Denis Mukwege has told authorities in Kinshasa to find a better option to maintain peace in North Kivu because the Democratic Republic of Congo was not for sale.

Dr. Mukwege says for over 300 days, the city of Bunagana has been under foreign occupation.

He says allowing another military from an interested party like Uganda was surrendering the dignity and integrity of the DRC.

Dr. Mukwege, a renowned physician who is now seeking political office, says it is unacceptable that the people of Congo should continue living like foreigners in their own land.

“For 300 days now, the strategic city of Bunagana in North Kivu is under foreign occupation. The DRC is neither to be divided nor sold,” he declared.

Dr. Mukwege is a popular figure in east Congo and commands considerable respect among the locals.

Recently, Uganda forces announced it had secured Bunagana with its soldiers to help maintain peace.

However, Uganda says DRC army had been warned against approaching the city as requested by the rebels M23 who have also been driven out of the city but are keeping an eye on it.

The Congolese government has denied that its army is not permitted to be in Bunagana and warned it had no business negotiating a peace deal with Rwanda backed rebels.
