WAR IN THE EAST: Pope Francis Expresses Concern Over Escalating Violence in Eastern DRC

Pope France has expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

During the Angelus prayer on Sunday February 25, 2024, Pope Francis called for peace in the east as the M23 Rebels continue advance towards the strategic city of Goma, North Kivu Province.

“I am concerned about the increase in violence in the eastern part of the DRC. I join in the invitation of the bishops to pray for peace, hoping for an end to conflicts and the search for a serene and constructive dialogue” declared the sovereign pontiff.

On the ground, fighting resumed on Wednesday February 21 between the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and the M23 rebels in the Kibumba and Buhumba groups, in North Kivu.

The resumption of hostilities follows an attempted attack by the M23 against the government forces.

Heavy and light weapons shots were heard as far away as the Kibati groups, situated about ten kilometers north of Goma.
