The Democratic Republic of Congo women’s national team have secured an important 1-1 draw away to Equatorial Guinea in the first leg of the Morocco 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers played this Friday evening.
Turkish-based Galatasaray star Naomie Kaba-Kaba scored the important away goal in the second-half for the Leopards Dames at the Estadio de Malabo in the Equatoguinean capital.
After edging Benin in the second round to reach the final round of qualifiers, the Leopard Dames looked to deliver a favourable result against the hosts, who were deemed favourites heading into the match.
Equatorial Guinea took the lead in the 20th minute through attacker Elena Obono who capitalized from some poor defending by the visitors.
However, the Leopards Dames were not to be outplayed as they fought their way back into the game after the restart.
Kaba-Kaba secured the equalizer and important away goal for the DRC with a beautiful goal in the 72nd minute to silence the home side.
The DR Congo will go into the second leg set for Tuesday in Kinshasa holding a narrow away goal advantage and could qualify for their fourth WAFCON finals.
