An eco-guard in the Virunga National Park in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been killed by an elephant.
The victim, Celestin Mahangaiko Bazirake met his fate on Tuesday, 29 August 2023 during his routine duty patrols as he was attacked by the vicious land mammal.
The Provincial Directorate of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature in North Kivu Province confirmed the death of Bazirake.
Bazirake, 38, has serving as an eco-guard at Virunga since 2014.
