As state agents led by a team of military intelligence officers illegally searched the home of opposition leader Moise Katumbi and his special advisor Salomon Kalonda, tension on the streets of Lubumbashi ramptured into a full blown protest on Thursday June 8, 2023.
The population in the country second largest city burst into song and chants showing solidarity with Katumbi as they denounced Tshisekedi.
They warned that touching Katumbi in a persecution launched by President Tshisekedi will be torching the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On May 30, Katumbi’s special advisor Salomon Kalonda was kidnapped by state agents at N’djili International Airport in Kinshasa only to be thrown in a military prison.
He was falsely charged five days later of illegally owning a firearm and having contact with the M23 rebels in a false bid to overthrow Tshisekedi’s government.
The accusation of Salomon owning a firearm have disproved by another opposition leader Augustin Matata Mpon who revealed that the firearm attributed to Salomon actually belonged to his bodyguard, a police officer, and went missing during the sit in protest on May 25 in Kinshasa.
