Swift action by his security detail yesterday helped Democratic Republic of Congo leading presidential candidate Moise Katumbi escape an assassination attempt instigated by President Felix Tshisekedi’s thugs.
The thugs, some of whom hoisted flags of MLC leader, a former rebel leader and ICC prisoner Jean Pierre Bemba, descended on the well attended gathering throwing projectiles and firing gunshots.
The incident happened in Moanda, a town in Central Kongo where Katumbi has spent 48 hours campaigning ahead of the polls on December 20, 2023.
As Katumbi was addressing the rally, the crowd began to disperse under external pressure.
Katumbi’s security team swiftly whisked him off the stage and aided him into the car with one bodyguard badly injured amid gunshots.
President Félix Tshisekedi has been informed the countrywide voting tide is not on his side and has unleashed vicious campaign against Katumbi who is favorite to win the polls.
