Former Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo says the Tshiani law was an illogical proposal that should never be entertained.
In a recent interview with France24, Ponyo says it was a distraction to propose a law targeting an individual who had previously served a high post in the governance of the country.
The Tshiani Bill is being advanced by President Felix Tshisekedi and his tribesmate to eliminate popular opposition leader Moise Katumbi from contesting the December 20, 2023 presidentiL election.
If enacted, the law will prevent candidates without two Congolese parents from contesting the top office.
Katumbi’s father is a Greek-Jew who settled in the former Belgian colony and married a native woman mama Virgine.
Katumbi, leader of the opposition Ensemble, is former Katanga Governor.
