PARALLEL STATEMENTS: DRC Government & MONUSCO Speak Out On Goma Unrest

The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced major turmoil in the eastern city of Goma over the past few days following demonstrations against the presence of the MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission assigned in the area with a number of lives lost in the unrest.

In the wake of the tragic incidents, the DR Congo government and MONUSCO have expressed contrasting positions in official communiques released.

The statements by MONUSCO and the DR Congo have varied on the part of those responsible for the violence that ensued.

MONUSCO in their statement have explicitly blamed the authorities to have triggered the violence after threatening to use force on the demonstrators even even before the chaos broke out.

But the DR Congo government claim that the threats to use force had been issued after an incident in which a police officer was stoned to death prompting a aggressive reaction from the authorities.

Meanwhile, both the DR Congo government and MONUSCO have called for an independent investigation into the tragic incidents to be established.
