MIXING FOOTBALL WITH POLITICS: Mazembe’s CAF Equipment Blocked At Airport By Congolese Authorities

After being forced to play its African Football League match away from home barely last month, TP Mazembe are a victim of a political battle after authorities blocked the club from receiving its newly arrived sports equipment from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With the CAF Champions League group stage matches around the corner, the African football governing has been sending all participating clubs various sports materials and equipment in readiness for the competition.

However, Mazembe are yet to receive its consignment from CAF after authorities at Luano International Airport in Lubumbashi.

Customs at Luano International Airport and the Congolese military intelligence units, DEMIAP and ANR insist that none of the materials sent to Mazembe must not be marked “Visit Rwanda”, a Champions League sponsorship brand.

However in a letter sent to the Minister of Sports by Mazembe, the club has reminded the government that it has already stated its position to CAF that it will not use any materials marked with the said advertisement brand even with the financial implications linked to it.

Mazembe has been a victim of political attacks and injustices by Congolese government who have been targeting club President Moïse Katumbi who is in the running to become DRC President in the 2023 General Elections.
