FROM THE CELL: Incarcerated Jean-Marc Kabund Congratulates Former Prisoner Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Election as New Senegal President

Incarcerated DR Congo opposition leader and former vice-president of the National Assembly Jean-Marc Kabund has offered his congratulations to newly elected Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a former prisoner himself.

Kabund who is currently serving a seven-year jail term slapped at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, sent a message of congratulations to Diomaye Faye from his prison cell on Tuesday.

“As a political prisoner in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as you were just a few days before your election, I wanted to convey to you, from my cell at the Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, the pan-African congratulations, while remaining convinced that your country will experience a radical change in governance that the Senegalese people need” a statement by Kabund reads.

Diomaye Faye was released from prison barely a week to his election after having been jailed since the end of July on a string of other charges, including provoking insurrection, conspiracy with terrorist groups and endangering state security.

Meanwhile, Kabund was last year in September sentenced to seven years in prison for alleged contempt of President Fèlix Tshisekedi and propagation of false rumours.
