Salomon Kalonda, a senior advisor to popular opposition leader Moise Katumbi, was this morning attacked and his supporters injured when he went to register as a voter.
The assailants are suspected to be a group of youths representing the ruling UDPS of President Felix Tshisekedi.
Kalonda is a popular figure in the Maniema region where he commands considerable support.
Shortly after registration at the Mamboleo school in the Basoko district in Kindu (Maniema), all hell broke loose.
An official for the opposition “Together for the Republic” in the city of Kinshasa, Mike Mukebayi, accused the UDPS of ochestrating the attack.
He indicated that the situation deteriorated when Salomon Kalonda left the registration center displaying the voter’s card.
Information obtained show that more than 10 people were injured in the clashes.
Salomon has condemned the attack saying saying acts of political intolerance perpetrated by the ruling party were undemocratic and defeated the rule of law.
“Youth should not be exploited for political purposes, but this will still not intimidate us. I will go all the way to save this population,” he said.
The entourage of Kalonda, reveals that the intervention of the provincial authority happened only after three hours of the incident even when the police authorities were contacted and alerted in advance.
