EARLY ELIMINATION: Vita Booted Out of Champions League

Democratic Republic of Congo’s representatives in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League AS Vita Club have been eliminated from the competition by Angolan side Premeiro de Agosto after the sides settled for a 1-1 stalemate in Kinshasa.

Vita who lost 2-1 on aggregate to Premeiro, needed to win on Sunday to progress to the pre-group stage having suffered a 1-0 loss in the first leg played in Angola last week.

The Black Dolphins opened the scores in the first-half through Heritier Imana Lote in the 25th minute to send the crowd at the Pentecost Martyrs Stadium into jubilation.

However, Premeiro leveled the scores just before half-time through Obed Mayamba, a former Vita player.

Vita’s elimination means the DR Congo has only one remaining envoy in the Champions League in TP Mazembe who were exempted from the preliminary round.

Mazembe will face Malawian champions Nyasa Big Bullets in the second round or the pre-group stage next month.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo will be representing the DR Congo and will come up against South African side Sekhukhune United in the qualifying rounds.
