At least 10 people are feared to have lost their lives on Saturday, 9 December after the canoe they were in capsized on Lake Albert, in Ituri Province with three bodies recovered so far.
“These people left the Tara village for Songa 2, entities of the Laudjo group in the Walendu Pitsi sector. And suddenly a violent wind blew and caused the death of 10 people. Three bodies of the victims have been recovered,” said Robert Ndjalonga, civil protection coordinator in Ituri.
Search efforts to retrieve the other bodies have continued, Ndjalonga has confirmed.
With the rainy the rainy season, violent winds and several weather hazards currently on, navigation through this Lake Albert has been declared a huge risk.
“Travelers are advised to always check the weather forecast to ensure the weather and weather hazards that could occur halfway on the lake,” advised the head of the civil protection service.
