DESPERATE TIMES: UN Chief Draws Attention of International Community Over Alarming Situation in Eastern DRC

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has drawn the attention of the international community over the “tragic” security situation in the province of North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Wednesday, the UN senior official visited the Bulengo Displaced Victims Camp in western Goma where he reiterated the need for urgent humanitarian aid for the displaced people.

“I spoke with people chased from their areas of origin because of violence, massacres, rapes and who find themselves in this same situation. It breaks my heart to see displaced people in an extremely precarious situation, here, on this site and who want peace” Turk said.

Meanwhile, Turk revealed that the displaced people had expressed their ultimate desire to return to their respective villages and regain their former lives, a situation which can only be made possible by the restoration of peace and an end to violence.

“Let these conflicts stop and everyone who exerts influence on the armed groups so that the violence stops,” asked this senior UN official.

During his trip to eastern DRC, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, was accompanied by the head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita.
