BUJAKERA CASE: Authorities Push Back Appeal For Provisional Release of Detained Journalist

Detained journalist Stanis Bujakera will remain in custody at Makala Central Prison after the prosecutors denied his lawyers’ appeal for his provisional release on bail.

In a decision today, Monday 25 September 2023, the Gombe High Court in Kinshasa resolved to keep Bujakera in custody after thorough consideration of the appeal for bail submitted last week on Friday.

This means Bujakera will remain in custody even after spending over two weeks in detention having been arrested on 15 September at Ndjili International Airport in Kinshasa and was later placed on a 15 day long provisional arrest.

Several activists and organizations both local and international have launched calls for the unconditional release of Bujakera in the #FreeStanis campaign.

Bujakera has been accused of “forgery, falsification of state seals”, “propagation of false rumors”, and “transmission of erroneous messages contrary to the law” in connection with the case involving the assassination of former Transport Minister and opposition Ensemble Pour la Republique President Moïse Katumbi’s spokesperson Cherubin Okende.
