ACCOLADES: Mbemba Wins Marc Vivien Foe Prize In France

Congolese international defender Chancel Mbemba has won the prestigious Marc Vivien Foé Prize for 2023 after an outstanding season with Olympique Marseille.

The Marc Vivien Foé Prize is an award handed to the best performing African football player in the French Ligue 1.

Mbemba was revealed as the winner of the award on the French international media outlet, RFI on Tuesday.

The former Newcastle United and FC Porto central defender beat off competition from two other nominees in Ivorian Seko Fofana of RC Lens and Terem Moffi of OGC Nice and Nigeria.

“I dedicate this prize to all Congolese people” Mbemba told RFI after claiming the accolade.

Mbemba becomes only the second Congolese footballer to win the Marc Vivien Foé Prize after Gael Kakuta who won it in 2021.

The Leopards defence kingpin has enjoyed a fine season with Marseille in the Ligue 1 having featured 35 times and scored 5 goals.
