Atleast one person has died with two others injured following clashes reported on Tuesday April 17 between the “Wazalendo” militiamen and the M23 rebel fighters in Mubambiro, situated about 20 kilometers from Goma, in the territory of Masisi.

According to sources, at least one person was killed and two others injured during the bomb explosions which fell in the area which houses the camps of the Congolese army (FARDC), the SADC regional force (SAMIDRC) and MONUSCO as well as certain civilian homes.

“In Mubambiro, the bombs dropped by M23/RDF terrorists caused some damage, including one death and two injured. The dead person is a mother, aged 38, who was hit by the shards of the bombs,” testifies Olivier Munguiko, civil society actor from Sake.

Violent clashes between the Wazalendo and the M23 persisted all day Tuesday in several hills overlooking the city of Sake.

According to local civil society sources, the Wazalendo have been facing a new attempt by the M23 to seize the strategic city of Sake.
