UNJUST DETENTION: Goma Activists Group Calls For Release of Incarcerated Members

The Citizens’ Movement Fight For Change (LUCHA) has strongly condemned the incarceration of it’s members during their peaceful demonstrations in Goma last Thursday.

Eleven activists from LUCHA were on Thursday, 24 August, taken into custody by authorities as they demonstrated against the sale of duplicate voter cards.

LUCHA have strongly condemned the detention of it’s members by the authorities and further describes the act as both illegal and unjust.

The activists were arrested even after making an official notification of the demonstration as per Article 26 of the Constitution.

However, they have since been charged with rebellion and are facing possible five year jail term as per Article 135 of the Congolese.

LICHA have also previously condemned the authorities’ use of the state of siege declared in Goma to suppress citizens with attempts to condemn the electoral illegalities that were being conducted in the territory.
