UDPS MONOPOLY IN KASAI: Kabundi Excluded To Avoid Splitting Regional Votes

A political party viewed as an ethnic rival of the ruling party has been blocked from fielding candidates in the December 2023 election.

The party is managed and led by former UDPS secretary general Jean-Marc Kabund, a Kasai and tribesmates of President Felix Tshisekedi.

Kabund fell out with President Tshisekedi a few months after the UDPS won power. He has been a fierce critic of Tshisekedi often calling him incompetent.

Allowing his party would entail sharing votes in the Kasai region with the UDPS which would significantly dwarf any hopes of Tshisekedi returning power.

The former president of the National Assembly formed his party after falling out with Tshisekedi.

Yesterday, he was greeted with the news that his Alliance for Change party has not been included on
the list of political parties allowed to operate in the
Democratic Republic of Congo.

As a consequence, The Alliance for Change cannot field candidates at all levels in the December 20, 2023 elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission of Congo (CENI) on Sunday started receiving application for National Deputy through to July 15, 2023.
