THE DEATH PENALTY IN EFFECT: Public Prosecutor Prescribes Death Penalty to Be Served For Army Soldier Accused of Murder

Following the decision by the government to lift the moratorium on the death sentence, the punishment reintroduced by Fèlix Tshisekedi and his regime is now in full effect.

The Public Prosecutor has prescribed the death penalty for a soldier of the Congolese army (FARDC) who is alleged to be that perpetrator of a triple murder in Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province (eastern DRC).

During a flagrant hearing held on Friday, April 12 2024, the public prosecutor, Captain Gilbert Ikozwa Kikolo requested for court to sentence the soldier to death even before he is proven guilty.

“May it please your Goma Garrison Military Court to establish in fact as in law the offense of murder and dissipation of ammunition and to sentence him to the death penalty for the offense of murder,” said said Captain Gilbert Ikozwa Kikolo, the public prosecutor.

Second class soldier Djodjo Endondo Engule is being prosecuted for the murder of three young people killed on the night of Tuesday into Wednesday at a restaurant in Majengo district, of Karisimbi in Goma.

“Three young men were shot and killed by a weapon bearer, likened to an agent of the Republican Guard, following the outfit he was wearing,” an administrative source announced to the ACP.

The city of Goma is facing growing insecurity, caused in particular by the influx of displaced people fleeing clashes between the FARDC and the M23.

At the start of Wednesday evening, a robbery resulted in the death of seven people, four of whom were riddled with bullets in a car, and three others killed by bullets fired by the bandits who were making their way at the level of the “President” entry.

About 70 bandits and alleged criminals operating with firearms in the city and its surroundings were presented to the press on Thursday by the interim police mayor, including seven soldiers, thirteen bikers from areas occupied by rebels, eighteen prostitute girls including two minors, accomplices of these bandits.

They were arrested in a targeted closure on the night of April 10 to 11.
