Intelligence information obtained indicate that President Félix Tshisekedi is contemplating an order to arrest respected Catholic priest Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo and several other opposition leaders.
Informants close to Tshisekedi say the Head of State is determined to create an easy path to securing a second term in office even if it means eliminating those opposed or those perceived to oppose his agenda.
The ruling party UDPS have accused Cardinal Ambongo of being an agent of the enemy working to fuel the insecurity obtaining in the country.
The sources have disclosed that Ensemble pour la République leader Moise Katumbi is among those targeted for arrest alongside other opposition leaders in Martin Fayulu, Delly Sessanga and Augustin Matata Mapon.
Tshisekedi is also flirting with the idea of pouncing on Kabila so he can hand him over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity.
But insiders have warned that Tshisekedi’s move will plunge the Congo into total chaos and cause irreparable damage.
“The one thing restraining him is the damage that this move will cause. Many people around him sre surprised that he wants to take a risk like this one which will put Congo on fire,” the source said.
So far, Tshisekedi has arrested Katumbi’s special advisor Salomon Kalonda Della, legislative supporter Mike Mukebayi and another opposition leader Frank Diongo.
Also being targetted for arrest is another critical Katangese opposition leader Jean Claude Muyambo.
