PRISON BREAK: Over 50 Inmates Escape From Walungu Central Prison

About 55 inmates from the Walungu Central Prison of South Kivu Province eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have escaped from the facility.

The incident happened on the night of Friday into Saturday, January 13, 2024.

According to the director of the prison, the prisoners demolished one of the rooms before climbing the wall to escape.

“They made holes in the ceiling and destroyed the metal sheets, while there were two police officers on guard,” says Mr. Ezekiel Ntasharha.

For his part, the administrator of the Walungu territory indicates that calls have been made for the population to denounce any fugitive.

Thereupon, one of the escapees was recovered in Cibarhama by members of the community who handed him over to the police.

Walungu Central Prison housed 75 tenants with only sixteen remaining after the prison break and it should be noted that among the escapees, there were three minors and a few convicts, according to other sources.
