POLITICAL VIOLENCE: Beni Legislative Election Candidate Shot Dead

A candidate seeking election as national deputy in the 20 December 2023 General Elections has been shot dead by an unknown armed group in Béni of North Kivu Province.

The candidate, of the ruling Sacred Union party, was shot dead on Friday afternoon on the Beni-Kasindi road near Semuliki bridge after being ambushed.

A group of armed men attacked the Sacred Union team who had been on their way back to Beni after holding a series of campaigns in border town of Kasindi towards Kyanzaba.

“According to their modus operandi, I think it’s a settling of scores. I avoid accusing the ADF,” a military authority from Beni who preferred to remain anonymous said.

After being shot, the candidate was evacuated to Beni General Hospital where he received medical attention until the evening when he was pronounced dead.

The location where the ambush took place is notoriously known for attacks by ADF fighters who at the same spot in June, 2022 killed three civilians including a woman and burnt down three vehicles.
