Democratic Republic of Congo’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) is finally bowing to pressure from the opposition to publish the names of of the 43.3 million voters it has captured.
This follows a meeting held between the opposition leaders and CENI president Denis Kadima.
According to the opposition who attended the meeting, Kadima has pledged to publish the voter register in the interest of transparency and accountability.
Although the development is a win for the opposition who have recently mounted pressure on the government to uphold the pledge for a free, fair and transparent election, they say most of their demands are still unattended to.
Among the opposition who met Kadima were Martin Fayulu of Ecide, Augustin Matata Mapon of LGD, Delly Sesanga of Envol while Moise Katumbi was represented by the General Secretary of Ensemble at the gathering on June 30, 2023.
The quartet said while the publication of the official voter register was a step in the right direction, it was also imperative that an external audit of the electoral register goes ahead.
