NEW WAVE OF VIOLENCE IN NORTH-EAST DRC: Atleast 14 Dead In Beni & Surrounding Areas

Acts of violence have increased in north-west Democratic Republic of Congo with atleast 14 dead in a space of a week in the city of Beni, North Kivu Province as well as other territories in the neighbouring Ituri Province.

A report by local civil societies revealed that, armed men from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out attacks on villagers in Kalalangwe and Mamdimo areas of Beni last Monday with eight civilians killed.

ADF fighters are said to have used machetes as well as live bullets to carry out attacks on civilians.

The attacks continued the following day in the neighbouring villages of Tchani-Tchani and Mambau six farmers were murdered.

Finally on the night of Sunday/Monday, the ADF also carried out attacks in Kavisa village, still in Beni territory, where atleast four people including three women lost their lives at the hands of the ADF fighters.

The attacks took place from around 9PM with most of the victims brutally ambushed in their own homes.

This is the second wave of attacks attributed to the ADF fighters of Uganda in Beni territory in the past week despite the Congolese and Ugandan armies having carried out joint operations to curb the violence since 2021.
