MANIEMA: Police Dispute Reports of Ban On Women Wearing Trousers

The Congolese National Police (PNC) in Maniema Province have strongly refuted reports claiming there has been a ban imposed on women wearing trousers and unkempt haircuts for male youths in the province.

Local media reports earlier alleged that the authorities in Maniema had been prompted to impose the ban in amidst concerns of growing immorality in the province.

However, PNC spokesperson in Maniema, Captain Michael Lubunda since declared the allegations as unfounded and false rumours at the press conference held on Saturday.

“The provincial commissioner has never prohibited young girls from wearing pants, much less young men from choosing hairstyles that suit them” Lubunda said.

Captain Lubunda added that the authorities had been alive to the public concerns about of the reports of ongoing immoralities in the province and was open to discussing possible way to address the issues.

The issue had also been raised after militiamen from Malaika Armed Group inflicted inhumane treatment on women who were thought to be immoral.
