Former president Joseph Kabila Kabange has rejected an invitation to a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to discuss the on-going process ahead of the December 20 polls.
Kabila’s party, the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD), confirmed receiving the letter but described it as a “distraction” and “untimely”.
Deputy Permanent Pecretary of PPRD Ferdinand Kambere says the invitation of its leader was ill-conceived to create a narrative that the process was transparent when in fact not.
Kambere says the PPRD’s political family, the Common Front for Congo (FCC), has made its position clear.
He said the FCC position remains that the composition and the reconfiguration of the CENI and the Constitutional Court must conform to the constitution of the DRC failure to which it will not take part in the process.
CENI has so far met opposition leaders Martin Fayulu, Delly Sesanga, Augustin Matata Mapon and a representative of Moïse Katumbi’s Ensemble pour la République as well as Adolphe Muzito.
The opposition have made carious demands including publication of the voter register and ensuring an independent international audit as well as ensuring that those who have been left out of the process in wartone areas be considered.
