Democratic Republic of Congo President Fèlix Tshisekedi has openly supported the Congolese population’s aggression against the European Union (EU) following recent protests against western chancellaries in Kinshasa.
The Congolese population have held demonstrations in Kinshasa where they have burnt tires, smashed windows at embassies and burnt vehicles belonging to foreign missions including most notably United Kingdom, United States, France as well as the EU demanding for their departure from the DRC.
The population have accused the western chancellaries of supporting Rwanda and the M23 rebels in the ongoing war in the east.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday night, Tshisekedi supported an angry reaction against the EU in Kinshasa.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to attack the buildings of friendly countries represented here in Kinshasa. But it is legitimate to make angry demonstrations of disapproval of certain positions like that of the European Union” Tshisekedi said.
Tshisekedi’s statement comes after the EU signed an MoU with Rwanda to promote development of “sustainable” and “resilient” value chains for raw materials also referred to as conflict or blood minerals.
The EU have been widely criticized by the Congolese for entering into the agreement and are accused of supporting Rwanda in the ongoing violence in the east as they aim to take over the region and its vast natural resources.
