HEALTH: Pregnant Woman & Three Children Die Due To Lack of Drugs In Beni

Four have died in the city of Beni, North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo owing to lack of medical supplies at the city’s health centre.

Kainama Health Centre which is the only health centre in Banande-Kanaima territory, has in the last 14 days recorded four deaths including a pregnant woman and three children who succumbed to their ailments due to lack of medicine at the health centre.

According local civil society leader in the city, Jonas Bin Kasumba, more were at the risk of death at the health centre as it has no medical supplies after attacks by the military group ADF.

“Last time we once again lost a pregnant woman who we wanted to take to Boga to get medical care there, unfortunately she died on the way. So we still recorded in the space of two weeks at least three children who still died as a result of the same problem” Kasumba said.

Kasumba has since called on government and Non-Governmental Organizations to come to the community’s aid by supplying medicines to the health centre.

“We confirm that in the Banande-Kainama groupement today, there is the return of at least 85% of the population who are already on the ground and who are running out of places to get their medicine. We are issuing a cry of alarm to the Congolese government, NGOs and people of goodwill to help us so that we cannot really witness a health disaster within the group” he said.
