HEAD-TO-HEAD: Tshisekedi Set to Meet Lourenço in Luanda Today

Democratic Republic of Congo President Fèlix Tshisekedi is expected to meet his Angolan counterpart Joao Lourenço in Luanda on Tuesday on an official mission.

Tshisekedi and Lourenço, designated facilitator of the African Union for the DRC-Rwanda political crisis, will meet to continue the discussions that were launched two weeks ago in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 37th ordinary summit of the African Union.

At the end of the mini-summit in Addis Ababa, President Lourenço had promised to continue his mediation with both the DR Congo and Rwanda in Luanda in the same format with view of obtaining a favorable outcome to this issue.

“The objective of this summit is to think together with a view to obtaining a ceasefire between the DRC and the M23 and to attempt a possible direct dialogue between the Heads of State of Rwanda and the DRC, because the The situation is deteriorating and there is a risk of conflagration in the EAC and SADC sub-regions,” President Lourenço said.

According to the Congolese Presidency, this mini-summit aims to result in 4 main objectives, namely: the return to a constructive and reconciling dialogue between the DRC and Rwanda; the immediate cessation of hostilities; the immediate withdrawal of the M23 from occupied areas and the launch of the M23 cantonment process as well as the implementation of the demobilization process.
