There was intense fighting between M23 rebels and another rebel group known as FDLR on Wednesday in Kihito and Binza in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Villages in the areas say calm has now returned after a fiery day of gunfire.
The fighting was concentrated in the villages of Kasave and Kihito in the Binza group in the Rutshuru territory.
According to those familiar with the situation, the fighting started on Tuesday night when M23 rebels opposed the presence of a group of a Hutu-Rwandan FDLR fighters in these villages located south of Binza.
Sources on the ground say rebels on the M23 have reportedly attacked FDLR positions. The
disclosed that several of the FDLR fighters were killed and wounded.
The number of civilian casualties have not been ascertained yet. Some residents who scampered into the forests when the clashes started are reclaiming their positions after the fighting ended late Wednesday.
Economic activity shyly resumed in Kisharo, a few kilometres north of the fighting zone.
