GOMA MOURNS: Over 50 Dead Victims From August 30 Massacre Buried

The remains of over 50 civilians who lost their lives during the clashes at the hands of the military during the August 30 demonstrations in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma were buried on Monday at Makao Cemetery.

A total of 57 people were buried with 47 identified by their families while remaining other were put to rest without being recognized.

Present at the sombre event was Interior Security Minister Peter Kazadi who tribute to the departed victims on behalf of the DR Congo government.

“By decision of the military court, we are here today to carry out the burial. The government covered funeral costs, but also provided financial assistance to support bereaved families and enable them to grieve in a more peaceful manner” Kazadi said.

There was tension in Goma last Sunday after government announced burial for the deceased victims was set for Monday as families demanded to bury their departed relatives according to their wishes.

However calm returned to city following Kazadi’s arrival as he met the families and handed a sum of 5 million Congolese francs (US$2,000) to each family for the funeral.
