As the Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni) will convenes to receive nominations for candidates for the country’s presidency, euphoria is building up around opposition leader Moise Katumbi.
Katumbi, leader of Ensemble pour la République, arouses hope in a population that is hard hit by war, disease, poverty and severe starvation.
In a statement, CENI have disclosed they are ready for the filing of nominations for presidential candidates beginning
September 1, 2023.
This is after nominations for other positions such as National Deputies have been received.
On August 22, 2023, CENI which announced an extension period for the submission of nominations of provincial deputies and municipal councillors.
Katumbi is the most popular candidate ahead of the election.
The former Katanga governor is credited for transforming the Congolese Copperbelt when he served as governor.
Both Congolese and international observers assert that Katumbi has a significant chance of defeating President Felix Tshisekedi on December 20, 2023.
