DRC VIOLENCE: SADC Seeks Peace Fund To Curtail Increasing Violence

The Extraordinary Southern African Development Community SADC Heads of State and Government Summit chaired by its Chairperson and Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço has noted the need for strategic guidance on the deployment of the SADC Mission in the DR Congo to restore peace and security in that country.

The Summit has also commended member States that have committed additional pledges towards deploying the SADC Mission in the DR Congo.

It has also reiterated the need for SADC to spearhead efforts towards mobilisation of resources for facilitating peace and security in the region.

The efforts include reviving discussions to establish and operationalise the SADC Peace Fund and engaging International Cooperating Partners.

Other Presidents that attended the summit which has since come to an end include DR Congo President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, Zimbabwean President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa among others.

President Hichilema has left Angola for Zambia at 19:53 local time (20:53) CAT.

According to a United Nations record, 6.9 million people are now internally displaced within the DR Congo because of escalating violence.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) has collected tracking data from all 26 of the country’s provinces.
