DRC OPINION POLL: Katumbi In 11 Point Lead Ahead Of Incumbent Tshisekedi With Five Months Before Elections

An opinion poll has placed popular opposition leader Moise Katumbi ahead of incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi by 11 points ahead of the DRC’s December 20, 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to the poll conducted by the Center for African Political and Social Economic Studies (CAPSES), Katumbi, a former Governor of Katanga, has outstanding favorability in more than three regions compared to Tshisekedi whose only massive support is in one region – his village area.

“Mr. Moise Katumbi is considered as the most credible politician in DRC with 45% of respondents as shown against 35% for the president Tshisekedi.

“In addition, 10% of respondents think that Mr. Martin Fayulu is a credible politician.

“Nevertheless, when the results are disaggregated by province, President Tshisekedi is the most credible candidate in the former province of Kasai and a part of former province of Equateur.

“Mr. Moise Katumbi is the most credible candidate in former provinces of Katanga, Kivu, and Province Orientale,” the report reads.

With regards the political change, 47 % of the Congolese respondents hope for another president in December 2023 while 32 % want a second term for President Tshisekedi with 22 % showing they were undecided.

“About the upcoming presidential elections, figure 14 shows that the candidate Moise Katumbi could obtain 45 % of votes followed by president Tshisekedi with 34 %,” the report adds.

On its website, The Center for African Political and Socio-Economic Studies is a collaboration of various universities (i.e., Marshall University, Prairie View A&M University, University of Laval, and the University of Kinshasa).
