DEATH TOLL IN EAST CONGO PROTEST: 8 People Recorded Dead; 28 Injured

The Democratic Republic of Congo army has announced that eight (08) civilians were killed by United Nations (Monusco) forces after protests erupted in the eastern part of the country.

An army official in Goma said there were 28 UN forces injured after residents pounced on the peacekeepers and their vehicles.

The most vicious of the protest was an altercation in an area known as Kanyaruchyna IDPs at which a UN convoy was ambushed when leaving Kiwanja in Rutshuru towards Goma.

There is growing frustration about the UN and East African Command forces in the eastern parts of Congo where residents feel the peacekeepers are doing nothing to eliminate M23, a Rwanda backed rebel group that has terrorized the area for years.
