BOMB ATTACK: Mugunga Death Toll Rises Proportionally

The death toll from the bomb attack at a displaced people’s camp in Mugunga, west of the city of Goma, North Kivu Province has been risen to 35, the government has revealed.

On Friday, 3rd May 2024, explosions were fired on a displaced people’s camp amidst intensified fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) in eastern DR Congo.

“This toll, which has evolved, was 14 dead. It is now set at 35 dead and 37 wounded,” said the Minister of Social and Humanitarian Affairs, Modeste Mutinga, who is leading an official government mission to Goma.

The Minister announced the new death toll this Friday at the end of an emergency meeting with Major General Peter Cirimwami, the military governor of North Kivu Province.

During this meeting, the government made arrangements “to organize the funeral next Saturday.”

The Minister also revealed that a government delegation from Kinshasa will join the other already in Goma and reassured that “all arrangements are being made to ensure that this funeral is dignified”.
