AFCON 2023 HOPES ALIVE: DRC Draw Mauritania 1-All

The Leopards have kept their hope for an appearance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations alive after forcing a 1-all draw against Mauritania on Tuesday night.

Despite of poor officiating that saw key striker Cedrick Bakambu sent off for a second bookable offence, the Leopards will be happy to have collected four points from back to back fixtures against Mauritania.

The DRC won 3-1 on Friday and picked a vital point in Nouakchott last night.

Bakambu opened the scores in the 9th minute but the home team drew level in the second half.

The DRC was denied a clear penalty when Bakambu’s goal-bound strike was neutralized by a handball that the referee ignored.

Congo’s best performing striker, Bakambu, was then sent off for a second yellow card. But that decision confirmed the referees’ poor display on the night.

The Leopard are still stuck at the bottom of the table but could make it to Ivory Coast next year should they emerge victorious against Gabon and Sudan in their final Group I matches.

Below is the ranking in Group I after four matches:

Gabon: 7 points (+1)
Sudan: 6 points (-2)
Mauritania: 5 points (1)
DRC: 4 points (0)
