REBELS ADVANCE: M23 Seize Strategic DRC-Uganda Border Town

The M23 rebels have continued their progression in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo with new significant territories seized since the start of the past weekend.

On Sunday the M23 managed to seize the town of Ishasha, which borders the DR Congo and Uganda and just 60 kilometers from the strategic territory of Rutshuru.

The rebels took control of the town after several hours of fighting that took place in the morning in Buganza, the last stronghold between the rebels and the Wazalendo militia group supported by the DR Congo army and government.

Thus, the majority of large towns in Rutshuru territory are now under M23 rebel group occupation which is a major loss for the DR Congo army.

This new occupation by the M23 happened barely few hours before a ceasefire came into force on Sunday evening, as agreed between the DR Congo and Rwanda under the mediation of Angola.
