NEGLECTED BY GOVERNMENT: Congolese Athletes Bemoan Deplorable Conditions During Preps For Olympics

A group of athletes set to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions provided by government for their preparations for the games.

With barely less than two weeks to the Summer Games, the athletes are still stuck in Kinshasa and train in deplorable conditions at the Pentecost Martyrs Stadium.

Brigitte Mbabi, a female, has pleaded with government to assist her and other athletes with adequate support and proper environment to prepare for the crucial assignments in France.

“If we can’t perform better, it’s because we are neglected in our country. That’s why I ask our Government to help us, to put some things at our disposal so that we can go and acclimatize ourselves even before the competition at the French level,” boxer Brigitte Mbabi said in an interview.

Athletes have complained about the delay in starting their preparatory sessions due to a lack of support from government as well the lack of adequate infrastructure.

Six athletes from the DR Congo including three boxers namely, Marcelat Sakobi, Brigitte Mbabi and Pita Kabeji, two swimmers Aristote Ndombe and Divine Miansadi as well as judoka Daso Kisoka are set to compete at the games in Paris.

The Paris 2024 Olympics are set to get underway July 23rd through to August 11, 2024 respectively.
