HUMAN RIGHTS DECAY: Death Sentence Against Corneille Nangaa Signals Lack of Rule of Law in DR Congo – EU

The European Union (EU) has spoken out against the government of the DR Congo and its non-respect for human rights following the proposed sentencing of former Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) President Corneille Nangaa and his associates to death.

The EU says the Congolese judicial system’s recent convictions of several people to death means the country is losing the rule of law.

The DR Congo government approved the lifting of the moratorium on the death sentence earlier this year for the purpose so as to deter citizens from rebellion.

“It is a setback in the rule of law, particularly if executions were to be carried out in a country which had until now chosen to maintain a moratorium on capital punishment. The European Union therefore expresses its deep fears in the face of this situation” EU Commission writes.

The EU also reiterated its total opposition to the death penalty regardless of the circumstances as it is incompatible with the inalienable right to life, cruel, inhuman and degrading.
