CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Mayele & Pyramids Down Mazembe

Congolese envoys in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League TP Mazembe opened their group stage campaign on low note as they went down 1-0 to Pyramids FC of Egypt in Cairo last night.

DR Congo international striker Fiston Mayele Kalala set-up his South African teammate Fagrie Lakay in the second-half to see off the Ravens at the 30 June Stadium.

Lamine N’Diaye’s Mazembe side made a slow start to the game with the hosts dominating much of the possession in the first-half.

And in the second-half, Pyramids’ dominance paid off as Mayele played Lakay through with the latter slotting home in the 54th minute.

Mazembe tried to come back deep into the game with two attackers missing from close range a wonderfully delivered cross by Magloire Ntambwe in injury-time.

The five-time African champions will now switch attention next week’s blockbuster clash at home to newly crowned African Football League winners Mamelodi Sundowns in another Group A match to be played in Kamalondo next week Saturday.
