WAR IN THE EAST: New Clashes Between AFC-M23 & FARDC Reported in Rutshuru

Fighting between the elements of the AFC/M23 rebels and the FARDC-Wazalendo coalition resumed on Sunday, May 25, 2025 and has already claimed lives in the Bwito chiefdom, in Rutshuru territory in North Kivu Province of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to local sources, the provisional death toll currently stands at nine and several wounded after the new wave of fighting.

These new clashes have since caused further displacement of locals who had only recently returned to the area and are now forced to move to Bambo urban area which is overwhelmed by the number of displaced people fleeing these atrocities.

The resumption of these hostilities which were launched by the FARDC-Wazalendo coalition, coincided with news of the arrival of former President of the, Joseph Kabila in the capital of North Kivu, Goma on Sunday.
