The population in Maniema yesterday engaged in running battles with police demanding the release of opposition leader Moise Katumbi’s special advisor Salomon Kalonda.
A video widely shared on WhatsApp shows a police officer laying lifeless on the streets of Maniema as the population of the area pelted missles at the security officers who were also firing teargas and live ammunition.
Kalonda was arrested on the instructions of President Felix Tshisekedi on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 as he attempted to board the plane from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi.
His forceful and arbitrary arrest has attracted widespread condemnation both locally and internationally. Protests have been recorded in Lubumbashi and East Congo where Salomon hails from.
Four days in a military location, the Ensemble pour la République high ranking official has not been charged.
Lawyers to Salomon, his physician, family members and friends have also been denied access to him.
