The Senate in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has adjourned the seating to deliberate over the request filed by the state to lift former republican president Joseph Kabila Kabange’s immunity.
On Thursday, May 15, 2025 the Senate held its session to examine the proposal filed by the Félix Tshisekedi government to lift the former President’s parliamentary immunity.
However, the session which was held behind closed doors did yielded no conclusive decision over the matter as a special commission was set up to settle the debate.
This commission has since been tasked within the next 72 hours to submit its report, in a context where discussions have revealed divergent trends.
Part of the senators have expressed support to the lifting of Kabila’s immunity, while others have invoked Article 224 of the Senate Rules of Procedure, believe the procedure should go through one vote of Congress, shedding light on tensions around this sensitive issue.
Tshisekedi through his Minister of Justice has pushed the request to lift Kabila’s immunity as he accuses him of being behind the AFC-M23 rebellion.
