US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States has secured “a large portion of Congo’s mining rights” as part of the peace agreement signed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda on Friday, June 27, 2025, in Washington DC.
Preaident Trump made this announcement just hours before the signing of the agreement by the heads of diplomacy of the two countries whom he also hosted at the White House.
The Peace Agreement does indeed provide for the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from the DRC.
The agreement preferred the term “Disengagement” to “withdrawal” simply because disengagement is more comprehensive.
Disengagement is a military term that encompasses the cessation of fighting, the withdrawal of men, equipment, and all defenses.
Indeed, military operations begin with a phase called “Commitment of Forces.”
This involves the deployment of human and material resources to the front or theater of operations.
They end with the phase called disengagement which is the withdrawal of human and material resources that were engaged at the front.
For example, the disengagement of MONUSCO in South Kivu; the disengagement of French troops in Mali, Niger, and that of American troops, etc.
